So finally we get to what makes Hyouka and only Hyouka really hit home for me. And that’s really about it – Haruhi, Gochiusa, K-On, and Sakurasou also all capture these parts very well. I need to be able to imagine myself absolutely loving this world, which Hyouka does better than any other anime I’ve seen. I need to be able to project myself into this world, and Hyouka’s high school setting does that well. Of course, I still really really love Haruhi, Gochiusa, K-On, and Sakurasou, but Hyouka’s still another tier above those.īefore diving into what differentiates Hyouka from all the other great slice of life anime I’ve watched, first we need to lay down some prerequisites which are required for me to become really attached to a slice of life anime in the first place. After watching Hyouka well over a year ago, I still haven’t found a slice of life anime that captures my core reason as well as Hyouka did. It was only after I watched it when I realized, holy shit this is fucking life changing. Then Hyouka came along, and to be honest, I didn’t really think much of it. I absolutely loved Fairy Tail and Code Geass (especially the latter), really liked No Game No Life, and liked One Punch Man and Your Lie in April. Here I will explain why Hyouka embodies this reason perfectly.īefore Hyouka, I’d only watched a few anime – One Punch Man, Fairy Tail, Code Geass, Your Lie in April, and No Game No Life. Pretty much everyone has a similar reason, but I felt that I needed to establish this and some more detail on this core reason. In the previous part of this reflection, I basically said that the core reason I watch anime is to find amazing worlds I can project myself in and vicariously experience.
